Hi all, I have just read this BBC article about piracy and its effects on the economy. Piracy of films and music is rife throughout the world and I was hoping you might give your opinions on it. Do you agree with the article? Will piracy ultimately lead to unemplyment and less investment in creative arts? Or do you consider there to be no problem buying pirated films and music? Do you consider file sharing to be a legitimate way to access films and music? Let me know what you think :)

Hi Simon!!! When I started to read the article, a remember that the piracy of our country has the greatest level quality in Latin America (a really sad dishonour for us) I continued reading and I noticed the piracy every day is increasing around the world and it will bring a lot lost economic and unemployment for people who work in the world of the show and in the digital era… I know that the piracy is a big problem but here in Colombia and as consumers we buy piracy books, CD’s, films, soft wares, etc…. we do this, because the prices of those kind of products are fixed to our pocket and at the same time we help most of the Colombian family who have to sell it to survive….with this, I don’t want to defend the piracy because piracy is a crime but I think that we have to see other context, for example, those people that became millionaires exploitation the natural resources and the culture leaving just contamination… it’s not a crime? Or what about the multinationals those assure to combat the piracy and continue making the technology that made it possible….. Simon, finally I think that that the piracy is not just a problem from of the distributors, it is a reflection of the relations of this world.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment Pilar. I think that defining what should be described as a crime and perhaps what should be desfribed as a serious crime is a very complex issue. That is what makes priracy such a difficult topic. It is obvious that if someone has the option to buy something for 2000 pesos instead of 30000 pesos then more often than not they choose to pay 2000 pesos! However, it does raise moral/ethical points about whether it is right or wrong...and if it is wrong...who is at fault: those that buy the products...or those that make them...or those that sell them?!?!?!
